Jet lag is real, and if you don’t have a plan for it, it can eat into the first day or two of your trip before you’ve even found your feet.
A Real Example: Miami to Madrid
Flying overnight from Miami to Madrid, I landed in the afternoon completely exhausted after a rough flight. Rather than pushing through a packed sightseeing schedule, I kept the afternoon light and made sure to stay hydrated throughout the day.
Instead of hitting the tourist trail straight away, I found a park and just relaxed. No pressure, no agenda.
Why Slowing Down on Day One Pays Off
That one decision to take it easy made a huge difference for the rest of the trip. More energy, better mood, and actually being present for the good stuff rather than dragging myself through it half asleep.
A few simple habits that help:
- Stay hydrated before, during and after your flight
- Adjust to local time immediately on arrival
- Plan low-key activities for your first afternoon rather than trying to cram in sightseeing
Arriving well means travelling better.
