Ten minutes from four MRT lines and a short walk to some of Singapore’s best hawker centres. The location is the headline, but there are a few things worth knowing before you book.
The Room and Pool
Carlton City Hotel is a larger property and the rooms reflect a consistent standard: clean, well maintained and functional without being remarkable. The pool area is a pleasant option for cooling off after a full day of walking.
One detail worth knowing before you book, particularly if you’re travelling with a friend rather than a partner: the bathroom is fishbowl style, meaning it’s visible from the room. There’s a blind, but it needs to be drawn. It’s not a dealbreaker, just something you want to know in advance rather than on arrival.
The Location
This is where Carlton City Hotel earns its place on the shortlist. The North East, East West, Thomson East Coast and Circle MRT lines are all within a ten-minute walk. Having access to that many lines from a single hotel means almost every part of Singapore is reachable without a Grab. Maxwell Food Centre and Chinatown are a short stroll away, which puts you close to two of the better reasons to stay in this part of the city.
For a Singapore stay built around moving around and seeing as much as possible, the transit access alone justifies the location.
The Staff and Late Checkout
The team allowed a 1pm checkout on the day of departure, which made a difference on a trip where the flight didn’t leave until 9pm. We did ask for the late checkout on arrival (so make sure you do the same). Having somewhere to store our bags and rest in the lobby (and charge our phones) into the early afternoon without paying for an extra night is the kind of flexibility that takes pressure off a long travel day. It also meant we could go out for lunch and return later to collect our bags.
The flip side: when a flight cancellation created the need for additional nights, the hotel wasn’t particularly helpful in sorting out an extended stay at short notice. Not hostile, just not proactive. If you’re ever in a disruption situation and need help sorting your accommodation, don’t expect Carlton City to go out of their way to help. I was basically told to book online with my preferred travel agent and then speak to them again!
Is Carlton City Hotel Singapore Worth Booking?
For a base to explore Singapore from, yes. The MRT access is exceptional, the rooms are clean, the pool is a bonus and the surrounding area gives you Maxwell and Chinatown on the doorstep. Go in with realistic expectations about the room layout and don’t count on above-and-beyond service if your plans change unexpectedly.
