Yellowstone is one of the most geologically active places on earth and genuinely unlike anywhere else. If you are visiting, these three sites are worth prioritising.
Old Faithful
One of the most predictable geysers in the world, Old Faithful erupts roughly every 90 minutes. Knowing approximately when the next eruption is due makes it easy to plan around, and watching it go off gives you a real sense of the geothermal power sitting just below the surface of the park.
Grand Prismatic Spring
The largest hot spring in the United States and one of the largest in the world, Grand Prismatic Spring is famous for its vivid rainbow colouring. The colours are caused by heat-loving bacteria living around the edges of the spring, with each band representing a different temperature zone. It’s a natural feature that looks almost artificial until you are standing in front of it.
Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
Less talked about than the geysers and springs, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is equally impressive. Powerful waterfalls cut through dramatic yellow rock formations that give the park its name. Standing above the canyon and watching the falls drop into the gorge below puts the scale of the place into perspective.
Worth the Trip
Yellowstone rewards visitors who take the time to move beyond the most obvious stops. These three cover the geothermal, the geological, and the visual in a way that few other parks in the world can match.
