If you are planning a trip to Zion National Park, Angels Landing belongs on your radar. Just go in knowing what you are signing up for.
What Makes it Challenging
The trail is known for steep drop-offs, narrow ridges, and an exposed final section that catches some hikers completely off guard. Chains are bolted into the rock along the summit approach to help climbers navigate a ridge that narrows to roughly one metre wide in places, with drop-offs of 250 to 300 metres on both sides.
It is not a casual walk. If heights are not your thing, the upper section will test you.
You Now Need a Permit
Due to its popularity, reaching the summit of Angels Landing requires a permit obtained through a lottery system. Factor that into your planning before you arrive expecting to just turn up and hike.
The Reward at the Top
Make it to the summit and you are rewarded with panoramic views across the full width of Zion Canyon. It is a genuinely spectacular payoff for the effort and the nerves it takes to get there.
One practical note: attempting it in summer means dealing with serious heat on top of everything else. Early morning starts are strongly recommended if you are visiting during warmer months.
