A private pool, your own villa, and dinner delivered without putting on real pants. That’s the pitch. But the traffic is horrendous. A 3.5 hour drive to cover 33 kilometres. Nobody put that in the brochure! Here’s what to actually expect before you book.
What’s Included in a Bali Villa
The private pool is a real standout. So is the daily housekeeping, which is standard across most villa tiers. Depending on what you book, breakfast or a private chef may be included too, usually at mid-range properties and above.
What you’re paying for when you book a Bali villa is space and privacy, not amenities on tap. This is the difference between a villa and a hotel. A hotel has a front desk, a restaurant, a gym, room service until late and staff available whenever you need them. A villa has none of that built in, and that’s the point. If you’re after the infrastructure of a resort, a villa is probably the wrong choice.
One thing that catches people off guard: the villa isn’t entirely your own around the clock. Daily housekeeping/cleaning and maintenance happens on a schedule, and that usually means a window where the pool is being serviced or cleaned. This means you’ll be sharing the space with others, even if it’s just for a short time. It’s a minor inconvenience but worth knowing if you’re planning your days around the pool or wanting to have a sleep in.
The Staying-In Option Is More Viable Than You Think
One of the underrated advantages of villa life in Bali is how well Grab Food makes the self-contained experience work. Full meals from decent restaurants delivered to the villa at reasonable prices means a day with no itinerary and no obligation to go anywhere is entirely viable. You’re not stuck eating whatever’s in the mini fridge.
This matters more than it sounds. A Bali trip that mixes active days out with slower villa days is a genuinely good travel format, and the delivery option makes those slower days comfortable rather than limiting. It also balances out the isolation that comes with being in a villa that isn’t near a walkable strip of restaurants and cafes.
The Traffic Reality
3.5 hours to cover 33 kilometres is not an exaggeration. It’s what happens when you’re in the wrong part of Bali at the wrong time of day. This is not a small detail. It directly shapes which area you should be staying in based on how you want to spend your time.
The traffic pattern in Bali is unpredictable enough that even locals plan around it. If you’re doing day trips, heading to the airport or moving between areas, factor in significantly more time than Google Maps suggests and do not book tight connections or early starts that depend on the roads cooperating.
Canggu vs Seminyak: Which One Makes More Sense for a Villa
These are the two areas most travellers are choosing between, and they suit different travel styles.
Canggu is more spread out with a surf and cafe culture that runs through its identity. Walkability is limited, which means you’re relying on a driver or scooter to get around. Villa life makes more sense here because you’re not missing much by staying self-contained. The trade-off is that getting anywhere requires planning.
Seminyak is more compact and more walkable. Beach clubs, restaurants and shops are accessible without a driver if you choose your villa location well. If you want the villa experience but don’t want to feel dependent on organising transport every time you leave, Seminyak gives you more flexibility. We chose to stay in a hotel in Seminyak and that was the right choice. We could literally step out of our hotel and onto the beach, which was a game changer.
The decision comes down to one question: do you want to be self-contained or do you want to be able to step outside and have things to walk to?
