The Official Check-In and Gate Cutoffs
Check-in cuts off 30 minutes before departure for domestic flights on both Qantas and Virgin. Jetstar is stricter, with a 40 minute cutoff. Gates close 15 minutes before departure on Qantas and Virgin, and 20 minutes before departure on Jetstar. These are hard deadlines and missing them usually means missing your flight.
Why the Cutoff Isn’t Your Arrival Time
The check-in cutoff is the latest possible moment to be ready, not the time you should actually be walking through the door. Parking or being dropped off, queuing at bag drop and getting through security screening all take time, and combined they can easily add up to 30 minutes before you’re airside. How far your gate is from security and how fast you walk also factor into the equation.
How Busy Is the Airport You’re Flying From?
Airport size and timing matter just as much as the airline’s cutoff times. At a busy airport like Sydney or Melbourne during peak hour, special events or holiday periods, arriving 90 minutes before departure is a sensible buffer. Outside of those busier windows, an hour before departure is usually more than enough time to get through the process comfortably.
When You Can Cut It Closer
If you’ve already checked in online and you’re travelling with carry-on luggage only, you can trim that arrival window down further. Skipping bag drop removes one of the biggest time variables, leaving just security and the walk to your gate to plan around.
Finding Your Own Sweet Spot
There’s no single answer that works for every airport, every airline and every time of day. Matching your arrival time to the airline’s cutoff, the airport’s size and how busy it is on the day will get you there with enough buffer without wasting half your morning sitting at the gate.
