A travel adapter solves one problem. Most people do not realise there are two.
The Two Separate Issues
The first is plug shape. Different countries use different socket types and a physical adapter lets your plug fit the local wall socket. Most travellers know this and pack accordingly.
The second is voltage. Australia runs on 240 volts. The United States runs on 120 volts. My shaver was only rated for 240 volts. The adapter got it into the wall but the voltage was completely wrong for the device. It simply did not work.
A plug adapter changes the shape. It does not change the voltage.
How to Check Your Devices Before You Pack
Look at the small print on the device itself or on the charger. It will list a voltage rating. If it says 100-240V the device is dual voltage and a plug adapter is all you need. If it only lists a single voltage such as 240V, a plug adapter alone will not solve the problem.
Phones and laptops are almost always dual voltage. Shavers, hair straighteners, and some hair dryers frequently are not. These are the devices worth checking before you leave home rather than discovering the problem in your hotel room.
For single voltage devices you either need a voltage converter, which is bulkier and heavier than an adapter, or the simplest solution is to buy or hire a replacement at your destination.
Check the voltage rating before you pack. It takes ten seconds and saves a frustrating arrival.
